March 16 – The Yeowomen tennis team moved to 2-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference by defeating Wittenberg University this afternoon 6-3 at the John W. Heisman Field House.
In a match that saw Oberlin win two of three doubles battles and four of six singles contests head coach Constantine Ananiadis said, “Everyone competed today against a good conference opponent in Wittenberg. The win should provide us with the momentum we need going into spring break where we will face quality opponents.”
The tandem of Jackie Golden and Kelly Sipp got the Yeowomen off and rolling at the No. 1 doubles spot. They were able to pull out a nail biter over the Tiger’s Jayne Miely and Sean DeLaney, 8-6. The win provided Oberlin with a boost of energy that they carried throughout the lineup.
Winning fairly easily were Kimiko Glynn and Olivia Hayden over Wittenberg’s Marisa Pechawer and Emily Nash by an 8-1 count at No. 2 doubles. The duo has put together three doubles wins in a row.
Jayne Hayden and Sarah Teitelbaum fell by an 8-3 count to Allison Earhart and Liz Micheletti to round out the day’s doubles action.
Glynn and Golden made short work of Earhart and Miely in the No.1 and No. 2 singles slots by similar scorelines, 6-3, 6-2, and 6-3, 6-3.
Oberlin clinched the conference match with (Olivia) Hayden’s win over Micheletti. Hayden went down a set losing 6-4 but battled back winning sets two and three 6-4 and 6-2. Ananiadis noted, “Liv was struggling a little today with a sore back but she fought through showing a lot of heart in earning the win on a day when she wasn’t swinging her A game.”
Teitelbaum who was also not feeling well on the second day of back-to-back competitions was replaced in the Oberlin line up by Marta Robertson in the No. 6 singles spot. She and Delaney split the first two sets but Robertson proved to be too much winning the super tiebreaker 10-2.
The Oberlin College women’s tennis team (4-4, 2-0 NCAC) returns to action March 24 at Hilton Head, S.C. where they begin their spring break trip with a match against Carleton College
