March 2 – The Oberlin College women’s tennis team continues to thrive in doubles play, but struggled in singles action as they fell to Tiffin University 5-4 on Sunday afternoon.
“We continue to play well in doubles,” head coach Constantine Ananiadis said. “However, right now we seem to be struggling with our confidence in singles play. We are going to continue to work hard and improve each day.”
For the second-straight match, Oberlin was missing its team captain and No. 1 player Kimiko Glynn - which potentially played a large factor in the outcome of the match.
Oberlin (1-4) got off to a great start as Jackie Golden and Kelly Sipp defeated Mia Hagiu and Jessica Stefanov 8-6 in No. 1 doubles action. Sarah Teitelbaum and Jane Hayden also followed suite with an 8-6 win over Teauana Long and Ashley Hershner.
After winning the No. 3 doubles dual, Tiffin went on to claim the first three meetings on the singles court to get right back into match.
Olivia Hayden responded with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Hershner in the fourth position, but Tiffin clinched the match in the No. 5 slot as Stefanov topped Marta Robertson 6-3, 6-0.
Teitelbaum improved to 2-1 on the year in the No. 6 hole as she defeated Tiffin’s Erika Bailey by a count of 6-3, 6-1.
The Yeowomen will have a quick turnaround as Case Western Reserve comes to town on Tuesday, March 4 for a 7 p.m. dual. Fans should make note that the match was originally scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and has now been moved to 7 p.m. |
