March 15 – The Oberlin College women’s tennis team put away the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University this afternoon to earn their first conference win of the season by an 8-1 score.
The duo of Jackie Golden and Kelly Sipp had their two match win streak at No. 1 doubles broken as they were dropped by Ohio Wesleyan’s Katie Figgie and Kirsten Pfund 8-4.
The Yeowomen (3-4) went on to win the remaining two doubles matches and swept all six singles spots. Oberlin head coach Constantine Ananiadis said, “The team is beginning to pull out the close matches by competing better and playing smarter tennis. The girls still have better tennis ahead of them.”
Earning another victory together in the No. 2 doubles spot were Kimiko Glynn and Olivia Hayden as they defeated Kristen Carney and Mollie Campbell 8-2. Rounding out doubles action were Jane Hayden and Sarah Teitelbaum with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles over Erin Cohn and Kaitlin Moran extend their winning streak to three matches.
In the No. 1 singles position Kimiko Glynn is back to her winning ways as she handled Katie Figgie 6-0, 6-2. The Yeowomen and Bishops battled in close matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions. Oberlin’s Golden edged Carney 6-4, 6-3 while Hayden earned her third straight singles win over Pfund 7-5, 7-5.
Jane Hayden put away OWU’s Campbell by a score of 6-2, 6-1. Sipp and Cohn battled to a second set tiebreak with the edge going to Oberlin 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Rounding out singles play Sarah Teitelbaum defeated Moran 6-2, 6-4 to earn her third straight win.
“The team will need to bring the same competitive drive they showed today as we take on Wittenberg tomorrow. It will be a tough conference match and we are looking for everyone to repeat their good performances of today,” noted Ananiadis.
The Yeowomen meet Wittenberg University tomorrow at noon for another North Coast Conference match in the John W. Heisman Field House.
