March 7 – The Oberlin College women’s tennis team did not drop a single set as they cruised a decisive 9-0 victory against Case Western Reserve on Thursday night.
“This win really proves that our hard work and commitment are paying off,” head coach Constantine Ananiadis said. “This will help us get our confidence back as a team and hopefully focuses us for the start of the conference season. I was proud of the fact that everyone played well together, as a team.”
Oberlin (2-4), which snapped a four-match losing streak, was greatly benefited by the return of team captain Kimiko Glynn to the lineup.
After missing the last two matches, Glynn didn’t miss a beat as she easily handled Kristen Ko 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 singles action. She also partnered with Olivia Hayden in doubles play as they dominated Sin Chu and Tina Chen with an 8-0 whitewash in the No. 2 position.
After filling in for Glynn in the top spot the past two matches, senior Jackie Golden returned to her normal No. 2 slot and showed great tenacity in a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 win against Marta Worwag.
After handling Chen in doubles, (Olivia) Hayden once again took care of her on the singles court by the count of 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 3 match-up. Sister, Jane Hayden also had no trouble in the No. 4 position as she defeated Chu with back-to-back scores of 6-0.
Kelly Sipp edged Jennifer Cleaver 7-5, 6-4, and Sarah Teitelbaum setback Emily Hoffman 6-0, 6-0 to complete the OC singles sweep.
The Tandem of Sipp and Golden also beat Ko and Worwag 8-5 in No. 1 doubles, while (Jane) Hayden and Teitelbaum topped Clever and Hoffman 8-1 in No. 3 doubles.
Oberlin’s six-match homestand will continue next weekend when they welcome conference rivals Ohio Wesleyan and Wittenberg to town. The Yeowomen will first take on the Battling Bishops on Saturday, March 15, at 2:30 p.m., before clashing with the Tigers on Sunday at noon.
