February 16 – The Oberlin College women’s tennis team got their spring season started off on the right foot by defeating the Baldwin-Wallace Yellow Jackets 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at the John W. Heisman Field House.
“This was a nice win for us to start the season, especially with them (BW) being ranked No. 12 in our region coming into today,” head coach Constantine Ananiadis said. “We didn’t play particular well as we are still working on our games early in the season, but we competed hard and made some good adjustments throughout the match.”
Oberlin (1-0) took two of the three doubles matches as the Yeowomen’s top pairing of Kimiko Glynn and Jackie Golden defeated Tiffany Allison and Meggie Glassburn 9-7. Oberlin’s No.3 doubles team of Rebecca Goldman and Kelly Sipp also claimed an 8-5 decision over Katy Marshall and Alyssa Trampert.
Glynn, Oberlin’s team captain and No. 1, cruised to a straight-set victory over Allison 6-0, 6-1.
The Yeowomen dropped singles competitions two and three but were victorious in spots four through six.
Jane Hayden had a very convincing 6-3, 6-0 decision against Krista Marshall in the No. 4 position.
After winning the first set 6-1, Sipp dropped the second set 4-6, but made some smart adjustments in set number three – winning 6-3 to defeat Trampert.
Sarah Teitelbaum, a junior from Kent, Ohio, won a hard-fought 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 match against Katy Wilson in the No. 6 position.
The Yeowomen will return to action next Saturday, Feb. 23 when they travel south for a 1 p.m. dual against Otterbein College.
