by Erik Kojola '09

October 5, 2006 -- The Oberlin College women’s tennis team competed in the Wilson-ITA Central Regional Tournament hosted by Wittenberg University on September 29-30 and October 1.  Junior Kimiko Glynn went 3-1 in the tournament, losing in the quarterfinals to Vindya Dayananda of The University of Chicago in three sets (3-6, 7-6, 6-1).

The ITA was an individual tournament not a team match, thus the results will not reflect on the team’s record.  Glynn played well and earned a quarterfinal appearance in the tournament, which featured the top players in the region.  She defeated her first three opponents in straight sets.  Glynn beat Stephanie Paul of Washington University (6-0, 6-2), Emma Nachamovitz of Case Western Reserve University (6-3, 6-3) and Kayla Smith of DePauw University (6-3, 6-4) to advance to the quarterfinals.  Sophomore Elle Anzinger also won her first match against Liz Byrd from Earlham College (6-2, 6-4), but lost her second match against Tessa Walsh of DePauw University (6-1, 6-1).

Junior Jackie Golden and sophomore Kelly Sipp played in singles competition, but lost in their first matches.  Golden fell to Halie Kerver of Albion College (6-2, 3-6, 6-2) and Sipp was defeated by Maggie Colvin of Denison University (7-5, 6-4).  Two doubles teams from Oberlin entered the tournament, Anzinger and Golden and sophomores Olivia and Jane Hayden, with both teams being defeated in their preliminary matches.

The Yeowomen will next compete on Saturday, October 14 at the Ashland College Tournament.
