Denison Bests Oberlin Women's Soccer Team, 5-1

September 29, 2007 -- The Oberlin women’s soccer team began North Coast Athletic Conference play this afternoon on Homecoming Weekend, but fell 1-5 to a talented Denison team ranked #15 in the nation. The Yeowomen drop to 2-6-1 (0-1 NCAC), while the Big Red improve with the win to 8-2 (1-0 NCAC).

Denison started the game strong scoring three goals in seven minutes.  The Big Red got on the scoreboard in the 13th minute with a goal by senior Kia Anderson assisted by junior Sarah Ash and followed with goals by first-year Jennifer Clemmer and sophomore Anna Rusch assisted by Ash.  Denison would score again before the end of the half on a shot by Rusch assisted by senior Laryn Kovalik putting them ahead 4-0.

In the second half, the Yeowomen played more competitively matching the Big Red in scoring.  Denison scored their fifth goal of the game in the 53rd minute on a goal by Ash assisted by Clemmer.  In the 75th minute junior Joelle Sesar controlled a ball outside the box and dribbled past several Denison defenders and slotted the ball into the corner of the goal to get Oberlin on the scoreboard.

Sophomore Sarah Grabinski had a busy game in the cage facing 32 shots and making an impressive 14 saves.  Oberlin had one shot on goal.  Denison took six corner kicks while Oberlin had one.  Ash had one goal and two assists and Rusch had two goals for the Big Red.

NCAC competition continues for the Yeowomen at Fred Shults Field on Oct. 2 against Ohio Wesleyan University at 4:30 p.m.
