September 10, 2006 -- The Oberlin College Yeowomen women’s soccer team played a solid game against the Thomas More Saints this afternoon, out-scoring the Saints 2-0 and treating fans to a spectacular display of defensive and offensive skills.
Sophomore midfielder Joelle Sesar slammed the first goal of the game in a one-on-one battle 19 minutes into the first half. Sesar led the squad in 2005 with six scores, with today’s goal being her first of the 2006 campaign. The Yeowomen continued to play a solid first half, pressing the Saint’s defense and keeping the visitors out of the net and off the scoreboard.
More scoring action followed in the second half, with senior midfielder Sam Schongalla landing the ball over the head of the Saint’s goalkeeper Carlin Scrudato 26 minutes into the period.
First-year goalkeeper Christie Zelnik had a total of five saves for the day, holding off several attempts from the Saint’s Brittany Jones. Zelnik also had much help from her solid defensive unit consisting of first-year Kate Berry-Millet, sophomore Ariel Kahrl, and junior Sarah Kotcon.
“We are very pleased with this weekend - we had two very good results,” Head Coach Andy Nelson said. “We played very hard and we moved up the field as a team. Most importantly, we played together.”
The Yeowomen are now 2-3 for the season. Their next game will be at home against Lake Erie College on Wednesday, September 13 at 4:30 p.m.
