Women's Soccer Team Concludes 2006 Season with Hard-Fought 0-1 Loss at Ohio Wesleyan University

October 28, 2006 -- Head Coach Andy Nelson and the Oberlin women's soccer team played their last game of the 2006 campaign this evening at Ohio Wesleyan University. The Yeowomen played a very strong game against the Battling Bishops, but the hosts prevailed with a tight 1-0 North Coast Athletics Conference win. With the loss, Oberlin finishes the year with a 6-12-1 record (1-7 NCAC). Ohio Wesleyan improved to 9-5-4 and 5-3 in conference play.

The Battling Bishops' lone goal of the contest came courtesy of a penalty kick by Julie Steffen 40:34 into the match. The hosts were awarded the penalty kick after Oberlin was called for a hand ball violation on a shot by Ohio Wesleyan. Due to the foul, the Yeowomen were forced to play with ten players the rest of the way and managed to pull together to keep the Battling Bishops out of the net for the remainder of the competition.

First-year goalkeeper Sarah Grabinski allowed just one goal and registered nine saves in 90 minutes of work. Ohio Wesleyan out-shot Oberlin 25-8 and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

"We played a great game tonight, not giving up another goal with ten players for the last 50 minutes of the match," Nelson said. "It was really a good performance by the entire team."

For the year, senior Sam Schongalla led Oberlin with 10 goals and three assists. First-year Kate Berry-Millett scored five goals and passed for one assist, while sophomore Joelle Sesar notched three goals and three assists.
