September 16, 2006 -- After dropping their first three contests of the 2006 season, including two tight 0-1 defeats, the Oberlin women's soccer team has rebounded with a vengeance to improve to 4-3 on the year. The Yeowomen visited Muskingum College this afternoon and shutout the hosts, 3-0, to with their fourth straight game. Muskingum's record fell to 2-4 with the loss.
Oberlin and Muskingum fought to a 0-0 draw heading into the intermission; however, a 40-yard direct kick by first-year Abby Chazanow put the Yeowomen up 1-0 67:00 minutes into the game. Fourteen minutes later, senior midfielder Sam Shongalla scored her team-best seventh goal of the season off a long cross from junior Jessica Greenberg. Oberlin's last goal of the game came when Greenberg drilled a shot over the head of Muskingum's goalkeeper with two minutes left in the game.
First-year goalkeeper Christie Zelnik played a superb game in goal, accumulating five saves en route to her third straight shutout victory. Zelnik and the Oberlin defense have now gone over 290 minutes without allowing a score by the opposition.
"We played together as a team very well this afternoon against Muskingum," Head Coach Andy Nelson said. "It was great to see all of our players' hard work pay off and to get to the level of performance that we did today."
For the game, Oberlin out-shot the Muskies 14-9 and held a 10-4 edge in corner kicks. The Yeowomen will look to keep their win streak alive when they play host to Marietta College on Sept. 19 for a 4:30 p.m. game.
