Women's Soccer Plays Gutsy Game Against Marietta in 1-1 Tie

by Flannery Cerbin '09

September 19, 2006 -- The Oberlin women’s soccer team played 110 minutes of tough soccer this afternoon in a home contest against Marietta College.  The Yeowomen's stamina and effort brought them to a respectable 1-1 tie.  They are now 4-3-1 on the season, while Marietta's record stands at 3-2-3.

Oberlin's offense attacked the turf, putting the pressure on Marietta goalkeeper Jenna Freeman throughout today's non-conference contest.  Shots came left and right from the Oberlin kickers, as first-year Kate Berry-Millett, sophomore Joelle Sesar, junior Jessica Greenberg, and senior Sam Schongalla each contributed two shots for the game.  Senior co-captains Kym Buzdygon and Mei-Lin Ha each added a shot as well today.  Sophomore Caitlin Milford knocked a goal into Marietta’s net 54 minutes into the game to put the Yeowomen up 1-0 early in the second half.

The Yeowomen remained responsive on the defensive side of the field as well. First-year goalkeepers Sarah Grabinski and Christie Zelnik held off multiple shot attempts from Marietta’s Marianna Siders, Colby Cardwell, and Kileen Lehman.  Zelnik had two saves in 45 minutes of action while Grabinski saved three shots after playing the second half and both overtimes.

Junior Colby Cardwell tied the game for Marietta in the 85th minute when her cross bounced off an Oberlin defender and into the back of the net. The Yeowomen and Pioneers battled 25 more minutes for the win, but neither team managed a goal.

“We are please with the results,” Head Coach Andy Nelson said. “We haven’t beaten them (Marietta) in recent history.  It was good to get the tie and we ended up very close to winning.  It was a real team effort with all kinds of people helping the team.”

The Yeowomen will play next when they host John Carroll University on Saturday, September 23rd at 11:00 a.m.
