Sam Schongalla (Sr.)
Yeowomen Roll by Lake Erie College, 4-0
Schongalla registers hat trick in non-conference victory

September 13, 2006 -- The Oberlin College women’s soccer team got off to a quick start today against Lake Erie College, finding the back of the net in the seventh minute.  Oberlin scored four goals by the 16th minute and coasted to a convincing 4-0 victory.

Senior forward Sam Schongalla led the Oberlin attack by contributing to each of the four goals, scoring three goals herself and assisting on another.  Sophomore Joelle Sesar scored the other goal for Oberlin and had an assist.  The four goals came in a nine-minute span of the first half, which were a product of the Yeowomen’s ability to get behind the Lake Erie defense.   Oberlin’s offense was very potent this afternoon, creating 23 shots, while Lake Erie managed only four.

With a solid four-goal cushion, Oberlin played strong defense and continued to play at a high pace.  Oberlin controlled possession and moved the ball well throughout the game. First-years Christie Zelnik and Sarah Grabinski split time in goal combining for three saves to preserve the shut out, while senior co-captain Mei-Lin Ha led the defense that thwarted the Lake Erie attack.

“We have been playing quite well,” Head Coach Andy Nelson said.  “We came out playing faster than the other team and were more experienced.”

The victory improves Oberlin’s record to 3-3, propelling them to a three-game winning streak, while Lake Erie dropped to 4-2. Oberlin will travel to Muskingum College on Sept. 16 for its next game.
