Senior Sam Schongalla provided the Yeowomen's lone goal against Kenyon College on Oct. 24 |
October 24, 2006 -- After battling back from a 0-1 half-time deficit, the Oberlin women's soccer team was edged by host Kenyon College in overtime this afternoon, 2-1, in a North Coast Athletic Conference showdown in Gambier, Ohio. With the defeat, the Yeowomen slipped to 6-11-1 (1-6 NCAC), and the Ladies jumped to 12-4 (5-2 NCAC).
Oberlin and Kenyon competed for 40:23 without a goal, until the Ladies' Beth Blackey received a cross from Elly Deutch and knocked it in to give her team a 1-0 lead. The Yeowomen's defense held strong for the majority of the second half, allowing senior Sam Schongalla to tie the game at 1-1 off a deflected shot at the 85:38 mark, sending the match into overtime. Kenyon scored 5:02 into the extra period, though, to claim the NCAC win.
The Ladies out-shot the Yeowomen, 20-8, and had seven corner kicks to Oberlin's four. First-year goalkeeper Sarah Grabinski continued to rack up the saves, as she tallied 13 in 95:02 of action. Kenyon's Rosie Davis had four saves, also playing the entire contest.
The Yeowomen will close out their 2006 season in an away contest at Ohio Wesleyan on October 28. The match-up against the Battling Bishops is slated to begin under the lights at 7:00 p.m.
