Women's Soccer Edged by John Carroll University, 0-1

by Erik Kojola '09

September 23, 2006 -- The Oberlin women’s soccer team suffered a 0-1 defeat at the hands of the John Carroll University Blue Streaks Saturday afternoon.  With the loss, the Yeowomen fall to 4-4-1 and the Blue Streak improve to 5-3 on the season.

John Carroll scored in the 35th minute and held on to the single-goal lead.  The Blue Streaks dominated possession and the tempo of the game, but were only able to break through the Yeowomen defense once due to Oberlin’s strong defense and goalkeeping.  The Yeowomen were anchored by the solid play in goal by first-years Christie Zelnik and Sarah Grabinski, who combined for seven saves as each played a half.

After John Carroll’s goal by senior Laura Violante in the first half, Oberlin was able to keep John Carroll off the scoreboard in the second half despite their heavy pressure.  However, the Yeowomen were unable to create many scoring chances and were forced to play defense for most of the period.  The Blue Streaks had nine shots to Oberlin’s one, and also led in corner kicks with eight compared to the Yeowomen’s three.

The Yeowomen had not lost a game in their prior four matches, but will look to return to their winning ways when they play at Case Western Reserve University on September 27 at 4:30 pm.
