October 3, 2006 -- The Oberlin College women’s soccer team suffered a heart-breaking 2-3 defeat to Hiram College in their first North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) math-up of the season. With the game tied at two and under a minute left in regulation, the Terriers received a corner kick and were able to convert on their third goal of the game off a corner.
The Yeowomen played a hard-fought and solid game, but were unable to stop Hiram from repeatedly converting on corner kick opportunities. Hiram scored on three of their six corners. First-year Hali Stamets took corner for Hiram and scored two and was attributed with an assist on another. The loss drops the Yeowomen to 4-6-1 and 0-1 in the NCAC, while the Terriers improve to 2-7 (1-0 NCAC).
Oberlin struck first in the 23rd minute on an exceptional outside shot into the upper corner from first-year Kate Berry-Millet (photo below). However, Hiram would respond two minutes later with a goal of its own off the corner kick from Stamets. Hiram scored again before the half ended in the 33rd minute on a goal by senior Lauren Manfrass, which was assisted by Stamets.

In the second half, the Yeowomen kept pressuring the Terriers and in the 61st minute got an opportunity to even the game when they were awarded a penalty kick for a hand-ball inside the box. Senior Sam Schongalla buried her shot in the side of the goal to tie the game at 2-2. The goal was Schongalla’s team-best eighth on the season.
Both teams were pretty evenly matched, creating scoring opportunities for both sides. Oberlin had 16 shots, while Hiram had 14. First-year Sarah Grabinski played the entire game in goal for the Yeowomen and had three saves.
The Yeowomen will next take on Earlham College (Ind.) on October 7 at home (12:00 p.m. start).
