Oberlin Women’s Soccer Hands it to Hanover College, 5-1

by Cassius Harris '08

September 9, 2006 -- In today’s non-conference women’s soccer contest between Oberlin and Hanover, the Yeowomen were the first to strike as first-year midfielder Abby Chazanow booted the ball through the arms of Hanover goalkeeper Amy Casebier 18:30 into the game. Oberlin scored three unanswered goals to cruise to a 5-1 win over Hanover, earning its first victory of the 2006 campaign.

Shortly after Chazanow’s goal, first-year Kate Millett scored a goal of her own,  giving Oberlin a 2-0 lead going into halftime. In the second half of play, senior midfielder Sam Schongalla quickly scored to give the hosts a 3-0 lead with 43:48 remaining in the game.

Oberlin controlled most of the ball possession in the second half by keeping the ball on Hanover’s field side, preventing the Panthers from scoring. Hanover finally got on the board 64:40 into the contest as first-year Emily Fox notched a goal, making the score 3-1.

With 8:46 left in the game, Schongalla answered again with an impressive goal shot to the left corner of the net, making it unreachable for Hanover’s keeper.  Oberlin put the Panthers away for good with 2:47 left in the game, thanks to a spectacular goal by Millett, who kicked the ball from an extremely deep position over the head of the Panthers keeper, sealing Oberlin’s first win of the season.

“The one thing that we’ve been working on is staying compact coming down the field,” Head Coach Andy Nelson said. “This win gets us going in the right direction for tomorrow’s game and the rest of the season.”

The Yeowomen now 1-3 on the season and will get back into action tomorrow when Thomas More College visits Oberlin for a 2:30 non-conference contest.
