September 27, 2006 -- The Oberlin women's soccer team's last tune-up before the beginning of North Coast Athletic Conference competition proved to be a tough test this evening. Host Case Western Reserve University topped the Yeowomen, 2-0, to earn a non-conference victory.
Oberlin's Sam Schongalla (Sr.) had two of her squad's four shots, but the Spartans kept the Yeowomen out of the net for all 90 minutes of action. With the defeat, the Yeowomen slide to 4-5-1 on the year.
The game remained scoreless for the first 13 minutes of action until Case's Katie Coakley converted off a corner kick to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Oberlin's defense held strong for most of the contest, but Bridget Mason's goal with just under 10 minutes left to play put the game out of reach for the Yeowomen.
Besides Schongalla's two shots, the only other two Oberlin shots came from senior co-captain Kym Buzdygon and sophomore Betsy Leach. A significant amount of Head Coach Andy Nelson's players saw playing time at Case, as 17 Yeowomen checked into play during the course of the game.
First-year goalkeepers Sarah Grabinski and Christie Zelnik split time at goal, with Grabinski registering a game-high five saves on the day.
Oberlin will return to practice on Thursday and Friday, then travel to Denison University for a 1:00 p.m. NCAC showdown on Saturday afternoon.
