New Facility Approved for Lacrosse, Soccer and Track

December 2, 2005 --- The Oberlin College Board of Trustees has approved construction of a new stadium for athletics and recreation. The outdoor facility, which will include a running track and a soccer and lacrosse field, was made possible by a lead gift from Robert Kahn ’55.

"The stadium will be a great addition to the college's athletic facilities, and will provide a great atmosphere for our student athletes to compete in," Head Coach Andy Nelson said. "The faciltiy will also provide the college and town communities a first class sporting venue for years to come."

Construction of the facility will begin in the spring of 2006. An eight-lane track will surround the soccer and lacrosse field. Seating for 1,000 spectators and a press box are also being considered. The running facility will be known as the Robert Kahn Track, while the soccer and lacrosse field will be named after long-time Oberlin coach Fred Shults '54. Richard Bailey ’51 has donated the funding for the soccer and lacrosse field.

"As the women's soccer program becomes much more competitive within the conference, and throughout the country, it'll be a great place to attract Nationally recognized opponents to," Nelson added. "I can see some great contests to be played at the venue in the 2006 and beyond."
