Oberlin Women's Lacrosse Tops Wittenberg in Home Opener, 14-7

April 7, 2007 -- The Oberlin women’s lacrosse team opened up conference competition against Wittenberg University and earned a commanding 14-7 victory on a chilly and snowy afternoon.  The Yeowomen continued their strong play from spring break and extended their win streak to five games.

With the win, Oberlin’s record improves to 5-1(1-0), while Wittenberg drops to 2-5 (0-2).
The Yeowomen possessed the ball and converted on scoring chances, while containing the Tiger’s offense.  Oberlin out-shot Wittenberg, 39-21.  Scoring for the Yeowomen was paced by first-years Scarlett Prati, who led all scorers with four goals, and Emma Edmondson, who scored three goals.

Wittenberg got on the score board early, notching the first goal two minutes into the game.  Oberlin would answer a few minutes later with a goal by sophomore Lela Hull.  After taking a 3-2 lead on another goal by Hull with 45 minutes remaining in the game, Oberlin would hold onto the lead until the final whistle blew.  Two unanswered goals before halftime gave the Yeowomen a 7-4 lead going into the break.

In the second half, Oberlin continued its strong play and pulled away from Wittenberg.  After the teams exchanged goals, the Yeowomen went on a five-goal run to take a 13-5 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game.  With the game under control, the Tigers would score two late goals.

Contributing on offense for the Yeowomen was junior Kaitlin Barrer, who had two goals and three assists, along with Hull, who notched two important early goals.  Sophomore Dana Rich and junior Beth Gula both had a goal in the game.  Sophomore Anna Hayden-Moy also dished out two assists.

On the defensive side of the ball, seniors Callie Gropp and Lynn Gerbec and first-year Caroline Walsh played solid and shut-down the Tigers offensive for much of the second half.  In goal, junior Kira Thorien racked up nine saves in 60 minutes of work.

The Yeowomen have already matched their NCAC win total from 2006 and look to continue their success against Denison University in a NCAC match-up at home on April 11 at 4:30 p.m.
