by Jessie Oram '07

April 12, 2007 -- The Oberlin women’s lacrosse team was defeated today 6-20 by a speedy and tough non-conference SUNY-Fredonia team.  With the loss, Oberlin falls to 5-3 (1-1 NCAC) and SUNY-Fredonia improves to 5-2.

The SUNY-Fredonia Blue Devils got off to a hot start scoring the first three goals of the game.  With 17:34 remaining in the first period, first-year Emma Edmondson got the Yeowomen on the board off a pass from Dana Rich.  The Blue Devils responded with eight straight goals.  Junior Kaitlin Barrer took control of the Yeowomen’s offensive attack, assisting each of the two following goals scored by sophomore Dana Rich and sophomore Lela Hull.  The Yeowomen went into the half down 3-12.

Oberlin started the second half strong, with Edmondson winning the initial draw control.  However, the Blue Devils out-shot the Yeowomen 16-4 in the second half, and 44-13 for the entire game.  Despite this, the Yeowomen aggressively pursued the ball, winning the ground ball battle, 24-22.  Oberlin and SUNY-Fredonia tied with 14 draw controls.

Defensively, senior Lynn Gerbec had five caused turnovers and five ground balls.  Hull scored three goals, and Rich ended with three points off two goals and an assist.  The Blue Devils were led by four goals and one assist from Christie Zaganiaczyk.  Valerie Snyder also contributed three goals to the winning effort.

The Yeowomen will close out their three-game home stand with a non-conference match up on Saturday against the University of Puget Sound at 1:00 p.m.
