-- The Oberlin women’s lacrosse team defeated the University of Puget Sound (UPS) today in a grueling back and forth game in Oberlin, Ohio. With the win, the Yeowomen improve to 6-3 (1-1 NCAC), while UPS falls to 3-7.
The Puget Sound Loggers, of the Northwest Conference (NWC), traveled all the way from Washington state. Last year the Yeowomen lost to UPS 12-17, over spring break in Washington.
Jessica Knight got the Loggers on the scoreboard first just 23 seconds into the game. Sophomore Lela Hull responded at the 26:47 mark, and was responsible for Oberlin’s first three goals. The first half was marked by offensive runs: with the score 5-3, the Loggers proceeded to score four straight, to which the Yeowomen responded with three straight. Hull finished the first half with five goals and two assists. The last goal of the half, scored by junior Kaitlin Barrer, occurred with just 15 seconds remaining off a pass from Hull and gave Oberlin an 8-7 advantage heading into halftime.
The second half belonged to Oberlin first-year Scarlett Prati, who scored seven of her nine goals in the final period. At the 15:28 mark, Prati scored her seventh goal, and Oberlin never looked back. From the 15:28 mark on, Oberlin out-scored UPS 8-2.
On top of scoring nine goals on 9-10 shooting, Prati also contributed seven draw controls. Hull finished the night with nine goals, two assists, and six draws. Again, Barrer led Oberlin’s passing game, with three assists to add to her two goals. Junior Rose Reid pushed Oberlin’s transition game with four ground balls and five draw controls.
UPS was led by Jessica Knight and Karen Hansen, who each scored six goals.
The Yeowomen will look to put on another good show for home fans on April 19 at 4:30 in a conference match-up against The College of Wooster.
