-- The Oberlin College women’s lacrosse team fell on its home field to the Bulldogs of the University of Redlands, 13-19, on Saturday afternoon.
Before the game began, the Yeowomen’s two seniors – Callie Gropp and Lynn Gerbec, both captains this year – were celebrated for their commitment to OC athletics. Callie Gropp’s steady improvement and enthusiasm were highlighted, as well as Lynn Gerbec’s defensive leadership and dedication.
Sophomore Dana Rich led Oberlin’s offense with fast and aggressive attacks all afternoon. Two consecutive runs by Rich sparked the Yeowomen’s offense in the first half. Oberlin got on the board after going down four goals with a goal by sophomore Faye Hipsman. After Redlands scored their fourth goal, the Yeowomen held the Bulldogs scoreless for over ten minutes. During that drought for the Bulldogs, the Yeowomen scored two goals. Redlands responded with one goal. Oberlin went on to score two straight goals, to tie the score at 5-5. All of these first five goals for the Yeowomen were shot low at the cage. The Yeowomen went into halftime down 7-10.
At the beginning of the second half, the Yeowomen went on a run and cut Redlands’ lead to two goals, with a score of 10-12. At the 8:24 mark, junior goalkeeper Kira Thorien, who had done an excellent job defending the fast break, had to leave the game with a knee injury. Despite playing without a keeper, the Yeowomen finished the game strong, cutting Redlands’ lead from nine to six, with a final score of 13-19.
Oberlin was lead by freshman Scarlett Prati, who scored five goals. Sophomore Lela Hull contributed three goals and two assists. Junior Beth Gula and Sophomore Dana Rich each finished with two goals, with Rich also contributing one assist. Redlands was lead by Haley Kern and Laura Matta, who both scored four goals.
