The Oberlin women's lacrosse team was defeated this
afternoon by Denison University, 12-18, in North Coast
Athletic Conference play. With the defeat,
the Yeowomen fell to 5-2 (1-1 NCAC), while Denison
improved to 4-6 (2-1 NCAC).
After going down three goals in the opening six minutes
of the game, Oberlin focused its offensive attack.
With just four minutes left in the opening half, the
Yeowomen took their first lead (8-7) on a goal by first-year
Scarlett Prati. Oberlin went into the half leading
the Big Red by a score of 9-7, off 9-14 shooting.
Denison came out running in the second half. Said
Head Coach Deb Ranieri, "We took them by surprise in
the first half, and our defense was great. In the second
half, they played better and got many breakaways. We
could have made better decisions."
Oberlin was outscored 3-11 in the second period. Denison's
second-half push was fueled by three goals from Meg
Wilcox and Rebecca Schoenherr.
Oberlin was led by junior Beth Gula, who notched four
goals, and sophomore Dana Rich, who scored three goals.
Prati and sophomore Lela Hull both contributed two
goals. Hull also racked up four caused turnovers, part
of a defensive effort that pressured Denison into committing
20 turnovers.
The Yeowomen will look to bounce back tomorrow in
a non-conference match-up at home against SUNY-Fredonia
at 5:00 p.m.
