Women's Lacrosse Squad Earns Team and Individual Academic Honors

July 12 -- Two members of the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team, senior attacker Beth Sebian and junior defender Callie Gropp, were recently honored by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) for their performance in the classroom this spring.

Both Sebian and Gropp held high enough cumulative GPA's after the completion of the spring semester to be among just 115 Division III women's lacrosse players to receive academic accolades from the IWLCA.

The Yeowomen also received team honors from the coaches association for achieving at least a 3.0 collective GPA. Only 35 Division III teams earned the IWLCA's team academic honors.

Four Yeowomen Named to All-NCAC Team

May 12, 2006 -- The North Coast Athletic Conference releases its 2006 All-Conference team today. First-year Lela Hull was selected Newcomer of the Year, while sophomore Kaitlin Barrer, first-year Dana Rich and senior Meg Reitz were named honorable mention.

Hull led the Yeowomen with 48 goals, 18 assists and 66 points, all of which ranked in the top five in the conference. She also led the team and conference with 4.07 draw controls per game.

Barrer was second on the team in scoring, racking up 39 goals and six assists this season. Rich ended the year with 16 goals and was third on the team in ground balls with 35. Reitz led the defensive efforts for Oberlin, tallying 55 ground balls and 35 draw controls.

Women's Lacrosse Finishes Season with a Win Over Tigers

April 29, 2006 -- The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team defeated the Wittenberg Tigers 17-15 in NCAC action on Saturday evening.

Wittenberg jumped out to an early 1-0 lead 56 seconds into the game, but sophomore Kaitlin Barrer answered back ten seconds later to tie the game. First-year Lela Hull netted the next two for the Yeowomen before the Tigers could score again. The lead see-sawed back and forth, with Oberlin holding an 11-10 advantage at the half.

The Tigers struck first again in the second, and Barrer answered with a free position goal. The Yeowomen continued to build a lead as they went on a 4-1 run over the next 11 minutes. Wittenberg brought the game within one after two free position goals, but Hull added a final shot with only one second left on the clock to bring the game to an end.

Hull ended the day with six goals and two assists. In her final game, senior Meg Reitz scored four goals and had three ground balls. Barrer found the net three times. Dana Rich added two goals, while senior Beth Sebian and sophomore Elizabeth Gula each had a goal in the victory.

"We controlled the ball really well," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "We played one of our best games of the season, and for our seniors, this was the first time we've ever won at Wittenberg, so tonight was really special."

The Yeowomen wrapped up their season 4-10 overall and 1-5 in the NCAC. Currently, Hull leads the conference in goals with a total of 42 in 12 games.

Women's Lacrosse Outlasted in Overtime

April 26, 2006 --- Oberlin came up just short as the Yeowomen lost to Kenyon College, 24-21, in women's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening.

After pulling within one goal on a score by first-year Lela Hull with 5:33 seconds remaining in regulation, sophomore Kaitlin Barrer was able to tie the game off of a Rose Reid assist with less than three minutes on the clock. The Yeowomen played tough defense for over two minutes to send the game into overtime.

In the first three minutes of the first overtime, Kenyon was able to score three quick goals.  Oberlin was only able to net one goal in the overtime period.

Barrer led the Yeowomen offense with eight points on eight goals.  Hull chipped in four goals and two assists, while senior Meg Reitz added three goals.   Dana Rich and Beth Sebian each added all added two tallies, while Beth Gula and Kira Thorien had one.

Junior Lynn Gerbec made her first appearance this season between the pipes.  She faced 39 shots and made eight saves in the game.

"I was really proud of our effort today," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "We’ve played all season with injuries, and to make this kind of effort with only one sub off the bench speaks a lot of this team’s character.”

The Yeowomen play their final game of the season on Saturday as they travel to Springfield, Ohio to face Wittenberg University.  The teams take the field at 7:00 p.m.

Barrer Dominates as Yeowomen Roll Past Falcons

April 24, 2006 ---Sophomore Kaitlin Barrer notched five goals on Monday evening as the women's lacrosse team defeated Notre Dame College 16-13 in non-conference action.

Notre Dame jumped out to a 6-1 lead early in the first half, but the Yeowomen were determined to fight back. Dana Rich and Lela Hull got the rally started as Rich used her speed, surpassing her defenders while Hull nailed three straight goals, putting Oberlin
within two. As the first half was winding down, Barrer took over, scoring back to back goals pulling within one. With three minutes remaining in the half, sophomore Elizabeth Gula tied the game at ten a piece, but the Falcons would shortly respond taking the lead into halftime, 11-10.

Second half was all Oberlin as they dominated on the defensive side. Senior Meg Reitz and Junior Lynn Gerbec each had seven ground balls, keeping Notre Dame away from the net. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley
Allen faced 20 shots and grabbed eight saves for the Yeowomen.

Sophomore April Pegler and first-year Jenna Schuerman were the leading scorers for Falcons, scoring five goals a piece. Barrer led theYeowomen with five goals. Gula netted four and had an assist, while Hull ended the day with three goals and an assist.

“We played a lot of games where we've been behind and weren't able to come back," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “They worked hard for every ground ball, and these next two games are big for us.”

Oberlin needs to win their remaining two games to get into the NCAC tournament. They get back into conference play on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. as they host the Ladies of Kenyon College.

Oberlin Holds Gators Close in a 14-10 Loss

April 22, 2006 ---The Oberlin College women’s lacrosse team fell on its home field to Allegheny College 14-10 on Saturday afternoon. 

The Yeowomen got off to a quick start as sophomore Kaitlin Barrer scored exactly five minutes into the game.  First-year Lela Hull added another goal just 39 seconds later to give Oberlin the 2-0 lead.  The Gators countered with an offensive attack that garnered five consecutive goals capped of by a shot by Michelle Dudevoir.  Senior Meg Reitz stopped the run by hitting the back of the net with just 3:02 remaining in the half, and after the teams exchanged another goal each, the Yeowomen went to halftime trailing 6-4.

Allegheny struck first in the second half, and with only 10:00 remaining in the contest, the Gators held a 12-6 advantage.  Oberlin mounted a ferocious comeback in the last four minutes of the game scoring four goals in a span of 3:06, but could not overcome the deficit. 

Hull led the team in scoring, putting up four goals and handing out two assists.  Barrer and senior Elizabeth Sebien scored three and two goals respectively and Reitz chipped in with one. 

“I’m really proud of the way that we played today,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “We just need to find the back of the net a few more times, and we’ll win these close games.”

Oberlin hosted their alumni game immediately after the contest, and would like to thank GeMar Neloms ’89 and Jill McFarland ’05 for returning to campus.

The Yeowomen will resume play on Monday, April 24th at 4:30 when they host Notre Dame College.

Women's Lacrosse Loses Conference Match to Wooster

April 20, 2006 --- Despite another standout performance by first-year Lela Hull, the Yeowomen were defeated by the College of Wooster, 17-8, on Thursday evening.

Down 9-2 at the half, Hull exploded with five back-to-back goals in the second half. All four goals were scored within eight minutes, the first two coming within ten seconds of each other. This is Hull's seventh game with four or more goals.

Oberlin's other goals came from sophomore Kaitlin Barrer, who tallied two goals and an assist and senior Meg Reitz. Reitz also led the team in caused turnovers with three.

"We came out on fire in the second half," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "Lela had another amazing game, and I think that as a team, we're moving in the right direction."

Oberlin hosts Allegheny College on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.

Hull Puts Up Four Goals in Loss to Bishops

April 15, 2006 --- The Oberlin College women’s lacrosse team fell at home to Ohio Wesleyan by a final score of 20-7 on Saturday afternoon. 

The Bishops scored the first four goals of the game before first-year Lela Hull netted a goal with 22:10 remaining in the first half. Hull has scored in every game this season for the Yeowomen and has tallied at least three goals in six games and at least four goals in three games. Sophomore Kaitlin Barrer scored two goals and fellow sophomore Elizabeth Gula scored one in the loss while senior Beth Sebian chipped in with an assist.

“We’ve been going into each game emphasizing the motto play smarter, not harder,” first-year attack Lela Hull said. “I think this team has a lot of heart and ability, but we have to get to the point where we don’t always have to play from behind.”

Oberlin falls to 2-7 on the season and 0-2 in NCAC play.  They resume play at the College of Wooster on Thursday, April 20th at 4:30 p.m.

Yeowomen Lacrosse Loses at Denison

April 12, 2006 ---The Oberlin College women’s lacrosse team opened its 2006 conference season with a 17-8 loss on Wednesday evening.

The Big Red scored the first five goals of the game in just under thirteen minutes. Senior Meg Reitz put Oberlin on the board, but Denison put up two more goals before the Yeowomen could score again. Dana Rich and Kira Thorien found the back of the net to bring Oberlin within four. The Yeowomen ended the half with a 3-1 run, sparked by Reitz. First-year Lela Hull tallied the last two goals of the half, and the teams headed into intermission with Denison holding an 8-6 advantage.

Oberlin was only able to put up two more goals in the second half to the Big Red’s nine. In the game, Denison had 12 caused turnovers to Oberlin’s six. First-years Grace Eginton and Dana Rich fueled the defense with six ground balls.

"I think we played a great first half," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "We were in a position we wanted to be in, but Denison definitely stepped up their game in the second half. We did some things really well, but there are still things we need to work on as a team."

The Yeowomen, now 2-6 overall and 0-1 in conference, will play their first home game of the season on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. versus Ohio Wesleyan.

Lela Hull Named NCAC Athlete of the Week

April 11, 2006 --- Oberlin women's lacrosse player, Lela Hull, has been named North Coast Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week.

Hull, a first-year attacker, racked up three goals and three assists in the team's 19-7 victory over Cazenovia. She also added five goals in a 19-14 loss to Fredonia State. She leads the team and conference averaging 4.33 points per game. She is first on the team and second in the conference with 18 goals scored in seven games.

Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Wildcats

April 8, 2006 ---Oberlin scored the first five goals of the game en route to a 19-7 victory versus Cazenovia in women's lacrosse action at University of Rochester this afternoon.

The Yeowomen took an 5-0 advantage in the first eight minutes of the game. Sophomore Dana Rich started the scoring 12 seconds into the contest. First-year Lela Hull made it 3-0 with a pair of goals, and Rose Reid followed with her first goal of the afternoon. Hull scored once more before the Wildcats were able to get on the board. Cazenovia broke the string with 21:54 left in the half. Heading into halftime, Oberlin held a 11-4 advantage.

Rich scored a season-best four goals to lead the Yeowomen offense. She has now tallied seven goals in her last four games. Hull racked up three goals and three assists. She leads the team in scoring with 18. Reid also had a hat trick in the victory with three goals. Beth Sebian, Elizabeth Gula, Meg Reitz and Kaitlin Barrer all had two goals, while Kira Thorien chipped found the back net one time.

Reid led the Oberlin defense with five ground balls, while Reitz and Devona Sharpe each picked up four ground balls.

"This was a very good game for us,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “We were able to work on different parts of our game today, and we’re looking forward to our first conference game on Wednesday.”

Oberlin will travel to Denison University on April 12. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.

Blue Devils Barely Escape Yeowomen

April 6, 2006 --- Despite putting up 14 goals, the Oberlin women’s lacrosse team lost at Fredonia College, 19-14, on Wednesday. The Yeowomen are now 1-5 on the season, while the Blue Devils improved to 2-1.

Fredonia ran out to a quick 4-1 lead in the first ten minutes of the contest. First-year Lela Hull put the Yeowomen on the board with an unassisted goal. At the 13:11 mark, Oberlin started a 4-0 run led by Dana Rich. Hull, Kaitlin Barrer and Elizabeth Gula each scored over the next three and a half minutes. The Blue Devils fought back with a 6-1 run in which Kaleena Goldsworthy scored two goals and picked up an assist. At the half, Oberlin was down 10-6.

Senior Beth Sebian found the net first for Oberlin 56 seconds into the second half to cut the lead to 10-7. The Blue Devils took a five point lead 2:10 later on two quick goals. Oberlin came back with a Hull goal, but couldn’t find an answer for Goldsworthy as she finished out the half with four more goals.

Five different players scored for Oberlin. Lela Hull put up five goals. This is Hull’s third game of the season with two or more goals. She leads the team in scoring with 15 goals in six games. Sebian had three goals, while sophomores Rich and Gula each added two goals apiece. Senior Meg Reitz and sophomore Kaitlin Barrer chipped found the back of the net once in the effort. Goalkeeper Ashley Allen racked up 11 saves in the defeat.

Reid, Reitz and first-year Grace Eginton led the defensive effort with four ground balls each. Reitz also added three caused turnovers.

Goldsworthy had a game-high nine points for the Blue Devils on eight goals and one assist.

“We’re doing a great job of coming back and playing really tough defensively,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “I’m really happy with the way we continue to progress and I’m confident that when we hit conference play, we’ll be able to get the job done.”

Oberlin plays Cazenovia College on Saturday, March 8 at the University of Rochester. The two teams take the field at 11:00 a.m.

Yeowomen Fall to Stags

March 31, 2006 --- The Oberlin College women’s lacrosse team competed in their final contest of spring break against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College Friday evening.

Despite showing signs of several signs of improvement, the Yeowomen fell by the score of 21-8, dropping their record to 1-5 on the season.

The Yeowomen received great performances by Lela Hull who had two assists on goals by Meg Reitz and Elizabeth Sebian. Kaitlin Barrer added two goals while Rose Reid scored one.

“We played well and continue to show improvement,” Head Coach Deb Rainieri said following the game. “We have played competitively, and we’re excited to get back to Oberlin and continue to improve.”

The Yeowomen will travel to Fredonia College on April 6 at 4:00 p.m.

Women's Lacrosse Falls to Redlands

March 30, 2006 --- The Bulldogs of the University of Redlands knocked off the Yeowomen 21-13 in women’s lacrosse action on Thursday at Ted Runner Stadium. Oberlin is now 1-3 on the season, while the Bulldogs improved to 10-3.

The Bulldogs struck first, scoring three quick goals in the first seven minutes of play. Oberlin answered back with an unassisted goal from Gula. Redlands offense ran off ten more goals before the half. The Yeowomen headed into the end of the first period down 13-6.

Oberlin scored first in the second half off a shot by Hull on a Barrer assist. At the 25:16 mark, Redlands chipped in three more goals in less than four minutes. The maroon and gold were able to answer back with five more goals of the half, but it wouldn’t be enough.

Three Yeowomen put up three goals in the effort, senior Elizabeth Sebian, sophomore Kaitlin Barrer and first-year Lela Hull. All three have scored a goal or more in all four of Oberlin’s games. Sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Gula scored for the third straight game with two goals. She led the team in ground balls with six. Sophomore midfielder Kira Thorien and first-year midfielder Grace Eginton also had goals for the Yeowomen. Oberlin goalkeeper Ashley Allen recorded eleven saves.

Redlands attacker Karen Nickerson was the Bulldogs leader with six goals and two assists. Redlands goalkeeper Jacqualynn Gordon made six saves in her 48 minutes of work, while Lindsay Feig racked up three saves in 13 minutes.

The Bulldogs outshot the Yeowomen, 41-25, and held a 48-40 edge in ground balls.

"We played really well tonight against a really good, aggresive team," Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. "We went up against a team that only has two more games left in their schedule. With the improvement that we continue to show, I'm really excited to start our season."

Oberlin has a quick turnaround with another home game tonight versus Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The first draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

Yeowomen Win Against Linfield

March 28, 2006 --- First-year Lela Hull led the women’s lacrosse team to a 16-7 victory over Linfield College on Tuesday afternoon. Hull ended the night with four goals and two assists in the win.

Hull’s four goals set Oberlin’s single-game high this season. She has found the back of the net at least once in all three games she has played and leads the team with seven goals.

Oberlin jumped out to a 2-0 lead on an unassisted score from Hull, who then assisted sophomore Kaitlin Barrer on the second goal. After Linfield scored its first goal, the Yeowomen scored seven more times to take a 9-1 lead. The Wildcats answered back with three goals of their own, but the crimson and gold headed into halftime with a 12-4 advantage.

The second half was fairly quiet compared to the first. Barrer put up the first goal after the intermission, and Hull would knock in the game’s last.

Senior Elizabeth Sebian added three goals, while sophomores Elizabeth Gula and Barrer chipped in two. Devona Sharpe, Meg Reitz, Dana Rich and Meghan Schott each scored for the Yeowomen. In addition to her goal, Sharpe was instrumental in starting the Yeowomen offense with a team-best five ground balls.

“We’ve worked really hard on the goals that we had set out at the beginning of the season,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “It’s good to see us accomplishing these things on a game to game basis, and to pick up our first win of the season feels fantastic.”

Oberlin has three games remaining on its west coast spring break trip. The Yeowomen will play Redlands College on Thursday, March 30.

Yeowomen Put Up 12 in Loss to Loggers

March 26, 2006 --- The Oberlin women’s lacrosse team couldn't overcome a strong Puget Sound second half, losing in Tacoma, Wash. by a final of 17-12 on Sunday, March 26.

Senior Meg Reitz led the Yeowomen with three goals. Dana Rich, Lela Hull, Kaitlin Barrer and Elizabeth Sebian each found the back of the net twice. Sophomore Elizabeth Gula also chipped in a goal. Hull got the assist on three goals, while Sebian was credited with two assists. Sophomore Ashley Allen made 11 saves in the game.

Nine different players scored for the Loggers. Carrie Sabochik led Puget Sound, tallying four goals. Katie Cuno added three, while Julie Weiss, Ellen Fisher, Jessica Knight and Ella Brown each added two goals for the Loggers.

Oberlin jumped out to the lead off of a goal by Dana Rich, but Puget Sound quickly recovered, scoring the next four goals of the game. The Yeowomen continued to fight back, putting up seven more goals before the end of the first half. The two teams headed into the half with Oberlin holding the 8-7 advantage.

Coming out of intermission, the Loggers put the first three goals on the board to take the lead for good. After a goal by Meg Reitz, Puget Sound wend on a 7-3 run to close out the game.

The game started a string of four straight road contests for the Yeowomen. The squad will take on Linfield on March 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the University of Puget Sound.

Falcons Fly by Yeowomen

March 21, 2006 ---The Notre Dame Falcons spoiled the Oberlin women’s lacrosse team's season opener, knocking off the Yeowomen, 16-6 Tuesday evening at Korb Field.

Sophomore midfielder Kaitlin Barrer led the team in scoring with a pair of goals and an assist. A pair of first-years, Dana Rich and Lela Hull, each added a goal. Sophomore attack Rose Reid and senior attack Beth Sebian also had goals for the Yeowomen. Oberlin goalkeeper Ashley Allen recorded eleven saves in the effort.

“Considering it was our first time going full field and being outside for an entire game, I think we did a good job,” Head Coach Deb Ranieri said. “We have lots of little things to work on while we’re out west.”

Oberlin begins their spring break trip against Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington on March 26. The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
