Yeowomen Play Hard in Defeat to Kenyon

January 5 – The Oberlin College women’s basketball team fought hard, but ran into some sharp shooting as Kenyon College topped the Yeowomen 76-43 on Saturday night at Philips Gym.

A Katie Thompson (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) three pointer got the Yeowomen within seven, 44-37, with 12:19 left to play but they were unable to close the gap any further as Kenyon connected on a school-record 16 threes with 10 coming in the second half.

“I am super pleased with the way we played for 32 minutes,” head coach Christa Champion said. “In terms of us going forward, we need to take those first 32 minutes and translate them into a full game.”

Oberlin (1-9, 0-3 NCAC) was led by Syrea Thomas (Cleveland, Ohio/John Marshall) with 10 points. Kenyon (6-6, 3-0 NCAC) was paced by Alisha Moreno as she nailed five triples for 15 points.

OC took an early 11-10 lead when Alyssa Clark (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Regina) converted at the free-throw line with 10:40 left in the first half. However, the Kenyon offense came to life as the Ladies went into the locker room with a 35-22 advantage.

“Tonight we showed a lot of progress as a team,” Champion added. “We played hard, but just ran into some tough shooting. We contested a lot of their three-point tries, but they all seemed to go in.”

Kenyon shot 47.3-percent (26-of-55) from floor – including a staggering 57.1-percent (16-of-28) from beyond the arc.

Oberlin will step out of conference for the final time this season when it travels to Kalamazoo College on Tuesday, Jan. 8, for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
