January 8 –Alicia Smith scored 16 points and Roneisha Kinney recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards, but it wasn’t enough as the Oberlin College Yeowomen fell to Kalamazoo College 69-53 in non-conference women’s basketball action on Tuesday night.
Oberlin started the game red hot with an 11-0 run, but Kalamazoo fought back to get within three, 14-11, with 8:34 left in the opening stanza. OC (1-10) kept up the offensive intensity, but the Hornets (4-8) took their first lead of the game (29-27) just before the end of the half.
“We got off to a great start,” head coach Christa Champion said. “We had a good offensive flow for the majority of the game and played some of the best offensive-basketball we have played all year, but in the second half we were able to finish when we needed to.”
The Yeowomen kept fighting in the second half as they tried to overcome a soft press that was applied by the Hornets – but were often limited to just one shot on the offensive end as Kalamazoo controlled the glass for the majority of the game with 41 rebounds (20-offensive).
Hornets point guard Kelsea Howell proved to be too much for the Oberlin defense to handle as she used dribble penetration to get inside the paint and also displayed a fade-away jumper en route to racking up a game-high 16 points.
“Howell displayed great versatility tonight,” Champion added. “When we started to limit her inside, she began dropping in that soft fade-away over the top and also got other people involved with her passing ability.”
The Hornets’ Nyemade Cooper also controlled the interior for KC as she finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds – seven coming on the offensive end.
“Cooper really hurt us in the post,” Champion said. “Her field-goal percentage wasn’t great, but we sent her to the line 11 times.”
Oberlin will return to the hardwood on Saturday, Jan. 12, for a matinee matchup with NCAC rival Wittenberg. Tip-time is set for 2 p.m.
