November 20, 2007 --
Head Coach Christa Champion's Oberlin women's basketball team hosted John Carroll University this evening for a non-conference contest at Philips Gymnasium. The visiting Blue Streaks took advantage of strong defense and deadly shooting to defeat the Yeowomen in front of a great Tuesday night crowd, 83-57. With the loss, Oberlin falls to 1-2 on the year, while John Carroll improves to 2-1.
The Blue Streaks jumped out to a 45-27 lead at the intermission and never looked back, shooting 48.1 percent for the game. John Carroll had a 22-2 advantage in fast-break points and a 50-12 edge in points off the bench.
Oberlin was led tonight by Alyssa Clark, who tallied 14 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. Roneisha Kinney added 12 points and nine boards, while Alicia Smith netted points and dished out four assists.
John Carroll was paced by Caitlin Sureck's 14 points and 10 rebounds. Whitney Hamilton also did an excellent job running her team's offense, as she accumulated 10 points, while fellow guard Rachael Price racked up four points, five assists, and six rebounds.
"Offensively, we got the shots we were looking for," Champion said. "Unfortunately, we just couldn't quite make the necessary adjustments to stop John Carroll's fast-break plays."
Oberlin will have the rest of the week off before hosting Baldwin-Wallace on November 27 at 7:00 p.m.
