February 23 – The Oberlin College women’s basketball could not overcome a sluggish first half as it fell to the Wittenberg Tigers 68-52 on Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale for both schools.

“We had mixed bag of good and bad in the first half,” head coach Christa Champion said. “However, we had a strong second half, shooting the ball well and playing solid half-court defense. If we continue to play like we did over the final 20 minutes today, I feel we have a good shot of winning on Tuesday at the NCAC Tournament.”

Oberlin (5-20, 4-12) will be the sixth seed in the conference tournament and have its chance to avenge today’s loss against the No. 3-seeded Tigers.

The Yeowomen were led by 1,000-point scorer, Alyssa Clark, with 14 points and nine rebounds.

After trailing 33-18 at the break, Oberlin played Wittenberg (13-10, 12-4 NCAC) head-to-head in the second half – being edged 35-34 on the scoreboard over the final 20 minutes. OC had another poor shooting half in the opening session – connecting on just 25.9 percent (7-of-27) its shots, but its offense came to life in the finale stanza – shooting 44.4 percent (12-of-27).

The Yeowomen got within 12, 36-24, as Alicia Smith converted two of her nine points on the afternoon at the 15:38 mark, but could not close the gap any further.

OC did convert 18 points off of 21 Tiger turnovers, while scoring 24 points in the paint.

The Yeowomen and Tigers will tip-off at 8 p.m. on Tuesday night at the Pam Evans Smith Arena in the opening round of the NCAC Tournament.
