January 12 – The Oberlin College women’s basketball team fought all the way to the end, but could not knockoff league-leading Wittenberg, as the Yeowomen fell 66-48 in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
Senior Roneisha Kinney just missed recording her second-straight double-double as she tallied game-highs in points (17), rebounds (9) and blocks (3). Alicia Smith also had solid effort for the Yeowomen as she contributed 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting – including a 3-for-5 performance from long distance.
“We played a solid first half,” head coach Christa Champion said. “They went on a nice to run to start the second half, but we battled back to get within striking distance. However, we had some key turnovers that we weren’t able to overcome.”
Oberlin’s defense kept them close in the opening stanza as they trailed by just seven, 34-27, at the break.
Wittenberg (6-5, 4-0 NCAC) led by as many as 24 in the second half, but the Yeowomen got within 13 points late in the frame but couldn’t quite finish the comeback. The Tigers benefited from 31 points off of 25 Oberlin turnovers.
“We came in with a good game-plan that I feel we were able to execute for the majority of the afternoon,” Champion added. “ I think overall we played solid defense and tried to limit their scoring inside.”
In the second half, OC (1-11, 0-4 NCAC) did limit the Tigers’ interior presence and forced 25 turnovers of its own in the game, but the Wittenberg offense came to life from long range as it was 6-of-13 from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes.
Wittenberg was led by Victoria Leali with 13 points – 12 coming in the second half, while Katie Gardner added 11 points of her own for the Tigers.
The Yeowomen will be back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 16 when they host Allegheny College in game-one of a double-header with the men’s team. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
