January 20 – Oberlin College first-year student, Katie Thompson, was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Sunday afternoon.
Thompson, a 5-foot-6 guard, from Mount Pleasant, Mich. scored a career-high 20 points off of the bench to help lift the Yeowomen to 71-68 come-from-behind victory over Allegheny on Wednesday, Jan. 16. Thompson was perfect in the game – finishing 6-of-6 from the floor – including three 3-pointers. The right-hander also went 5-for-5 at the free-throw line during her 26 minutes of work against the Gators.
In a 82-59 loss to Denison (Jan. 19), Thompson was the third-leading scorer for the Yeowomen with seven points – making 5-of-6 free throws during her 24 minutes of playing time.
For the week Thompson averaged 13.5 points-per-game and shot 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the floor – including a 3-of-4 effort from long distance. She also finished 10-of-11 from the free-throw line (90.9 percent), while averaging just 25 minutes per game.
This is the first POW award for the Yeowomen this season. Former Oberlin standout, Jessie Oram last won the award on Nov. 28, 2006 after surpassing the 1,000-point plateau in a 76-68 victory over Bluffton last season (11/21/06).
Oberlin will play its final non-conference game of the season tomorrow (Jan. 21) at 2 p.m. against Heidelberg College. The Yeowomen will be hosting a youth clinic prior to the game at 11:45 a.m. All children are encouraged to attend this fun event. For additional questions about the clinic, contact assistant coach Janell Crayton at 440-775-6460 or via email at janell.crayton@oberlin.edu.
