January 26 – A season-high 21 points from junior Alyssa Clark was not enough as the Oberlin College Yeowomen lost to the league-leading Kenyon College Ladies, 78-61, on Saturday afternoon at the Tomsich Arena.
Clark, who has scored in double-figures in three-straight games and four of her last five, finished the afternoon 6-of-13 from the floor and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. NCAC Player of the Week, Katie Thompson also added 10 points – connecting on two triples and four free throws in the game.
“We pushed and challenged Kenyon all game,” head coach Christa Champion said. “I was proud of our effort, but Kenyon is a very good team that capitalized on our mistakes. We gave up too many fast-break points and they did a great job of defending us.”
The Ladies (12-6, 9-0 NCAC) displayed their strong shooting ability in the first half – depositing 15-of-31 (48.8 percent) attempts in the opening session en route to building a 38-24 lead at the break. Clark scored five-straight points to give OC a 12-11 lead at the 12:14 mark, but Kenyon responded with a 10-0 run over the four minutes to take control of the game.
However, Oberlin (3-14, 2-6) didn’t go away quietly as it had another strong second half – scoring 37 points over the final 20 minutes, doing a large portion of its damage at the stripe with 14 makes on 18 attempts in the frame. A pair of Clark charity tosses got Oberlin within nine, 54-45, with 8:07 to play, but once again the Ladies spoiled any chance of comeback with an 11-1 run of their own to ice away the win.
The Ladies were benefited by a large production from their bench bunch as they contributed 46 points to Kenyon’s offensive attack. Kenyon also capitalized on 23 Oberlin turnovers – converting them into 28 points.
Oberlin will back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 30 at Ohio Wesleyan. Tip-time is set for 7:30 p.m.
