February 16 – The Oberlin College women’s basketball team found themselves on the wrong end of a 57-54 decision against Hiram College on Saturday afternoon.
Alicia Smith led the Yeowomen with 14 points as she dialed in on 4-of-6 triple tries in the game. Alyssa Clark added 12 point and Roneisha Kinney chipped in 10 of her own for OC.
“We did not bring our A-game defensively,” head coach Christa Champion said. “We let them score too easily and we had no answer for (Stephanie) Zunic. All in all, this was a very disappointing loss.”
Oberlin (5-18, 4-10 NCAC) led by three, 52-49, with 2:34 to play, but the Terriers scored eight of the game’s final 10 points to steal the win away from the Yeowomen.
Stephanie Zunic scored six of her game-high 20 points down the stretch to help the cause for Hiram, while Oberlin’s scoring came off of two free throws in crunch time.
The Yeowomen held a 28-27 edge at the half, but after starting the second session with a triple-hit, Hiram ripped off a 9-0 run over the next five minutes to jumpstart the offense in the second half.
Hiram (5-17, 3-11 NCAC) shot 41. 5 percent (22-of-53) from the floor , while limiting Oberlin to just 32.1 percent (18-of-56) shooting.
The Yeowomen also shot a very uncharacteristic 54.5 percent (12-of-22) at the free-throw line, which really hurt the final outcome.
Oberlin will look to regroup on Wednesday (Feb.20) night when it welcomes Ohio Wesleyan to town for the home finale. Tip-time is slated for 7:30 p.m. from Philips Gym.
