January 23 – A strong first half, and stingy defense lifted the Oberlin College women’s basketball team to a 63-44 win over Hiram College on Wednesday night.
Junior Alyssa Clark recorded her second-straight double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while first-year players Syrea Thomas and Katie Thompson each added 10 points for the Yeowomen.
“We had a solid effort in all phases of the game tonight,” head coach Christa Champion said. “We played great defense and took care of the ball well.”
Oberlin (3-13, 2-5 NCAC) limited Hiram (3-12, 1-6 NCAC) to just 28.8 percent (17-of-59) shooting as the Terriers’ 17 makes and 44 points mark season-lows for any OC opponent this season.
After falling behind 2-0 in the game’s opening seconds, the Yeowomen claimed a 5-4 edge four minutes into the game and never trailed the rest of the way. Already ahead 20-9 with 8:36 left on the first-half clock, OC scored 14 of the final 21 points of the frame to hold a 34-16 advantage at the intermission.
The Terriers tried to claw their way back into it in the second half - getting within 13, 45-32, at the eight-minute mark, but Oberlin locked-down defensively the rest of the way to halt any chance of a Hiram comeback.
“I am glad we played a complete game for 40 minutes tonight,” Champion added. “We played aggressively on both ends of the floor and it really paid off.”
The Yeowomen also raked in a season-high 51 rebounds on the night and cashed in 21-of-30 free throws for a 70 percent clip.
Hiram had just one player in double-figures as Alex Dellas checked in with 12 points.
Oberlin will return to the hardwood on Saturday, Jan. 26, when it travels to Gambier, Ohio to battle Kenyon. Tip-time is slated for 2 p.m.
