Kinney Registers Fifth Double-Double In Loss to Heidelberg

Final Stats

January 21 – Roneisha Kinney scored 18 points and recorded 13 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to propel the Oberlin College women’s basketball team to victory as they fell 69-58 to Heidelberg College in non-conference action on Monday afternoon.

Kinney, a 6-foot-2 senior, from Cleveland, Ohio (Rhodes HS) finished 6-of-11 from the floor and also cashed in 6-of-8 charity tosses in the game. Seven of her game-high 13 boards came on the offensive end – as she finished one rebound shy of a season-high (14 vs. Rochester 11/17/07 & La Roche 12/11/07). The double-double recorded by Kinney marks the fifth time this season she has achieved that feat.

Alyssa Clark also had a strong afternoon for Oberlin as she too recorded a double-double with a season-high 17 points, while matching a season-best 10 boards in her 33 minutes of work. Sophomore Alicia Smith added nine points – connecting on three triples in the game.

“ My team played great,” head coach Christa Champion said. “We did some new things today and used some different plays that I think will really help us out when we get back into conference play. The players did everything we asked of them, but we just missed too many shots inside and gave them too many good looks.”

Oberlin (2-13) and Heidelberg (9-7) battled neck-and-neck for the majority of the game as the contest featured six lead changes and five ties. Clark gave the Yeowomen a 27-19 lead at the 5:18 mark of the first half, but Student Princess responded with an 11-5 run to closeout the half and trail 32-30 at the intermission.

The Berg started the second half with a 15-6 run that was capped off by a 3-ball from Brittany Skolnicki  - giving her team a 45-38 advantage with 14:04 to play. A Kinney jumper got the Yeowomen to within one, 50-49, at the 8:40 mark, but Oberlin was unable to strive any closer the rest of the way.

“Heidelberg is a veteran team that has some big wins this season,” Champion added. “I thought we played very aggressively today against a good team, and I was very happy with that. However, I would have liked to see that aggressiveness turn into more opportunities at the free-throw line.”

Oberlin took just two free throws in the second half – making one, compared to nine attempts for HC – which made six. For the game, Oberlin shot 38.6 percent from the floor (22-of-57), 66.7 percent (9-of-13) from the line and 35.7 (4-of-14) percent from long range.

The Berg was led by Amanda Campbell with a game-high 20 points to go along with 12 rebounds. As a team, Heidelberg hoisted 61 shots on the afternoon – converting 23 of them for a 36.5 percent clip. Many of those came from beyond the arc as they dialed in on 12 of their 28 attempts from long distance for a 42.9 percent success rate. HC also shot 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the stripe.

Oberlin will return to conference play on Wednesday night when Hiram invades Philips Gym for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
