Yeowomen Fall at Denison, 82-59

Final Stats

January 19 – The Oberlin College Yeowomen had a strong second-half effort, but could not overcome a slow start as they fell to Denison 82-59 on Saturday afternoon.

Oberlin (2-12, 1-5 NCAC) got a tremendous contribution from senior Roneisha Kinney as she scored a game-high 20 points to go along with 13 rebounds – nine coming on the offensive end. First-year Syrea Thomas added 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting.

“Denison is a very good team, especially offensively,” head coach Christa Champion said. “We tried a lot of different things defensively, but they continued to shoot the ball well.”

The Big Red (9-6, 5-1 NCAC) connected on 46 percent (29-of-63) of their attempts compared to just 33.9 percent (20-of-59) for OC.

Oberlin was plagued by some cold shooting in the first half, which allowed Denison to take a 38-19 lead into the locker room.

“We had some good possessions in the first half,” Champion added. “However, we just couldn’t finish a lot of the looks we had.”

The second half was a different story for the Yeowomen as they played with the Big Red neck-and-neck by scoring 40 points over the final 20 minutes.

“I am proud of the way we played in the second half,” Champion said. “We played hard all the way to end and I commend their effort in the second half for not giving up.”

Denison had three players in double-figures with Haley Dahlgard leading the way with 18 points.

Oberlin will play its final non-conference game of the season on Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 21) at 2 p.m. against Heidelberg College. The Yeowomen will be hosting a youth clinic prior to the game at 11:45 a.m. All children are encouraged to attend this fun event.
