January 16 – First-year Katie Thompson scored a career-high 20 points off of the bench to help lift the Oberlin College Yeowomen to 71-68 come-from-behind victory over Allegheny College on Wednesday night.
Thompson was perfect in the game – finishing 6-of-6 from the floor – including three 3-pointers. The Mount Pleasant, Mich. native also went 5-for-5 at the free-throw line during her 26 minutes of work.
Junior Alyssa Clark also played a large role in the OC comeback - scoring 12 of her 14 points in the second half. Second-year player Alicia Smith also dropped in 19 points as she helped keep the Yeowomen within striking distance with a strong first-half performance.
“Obviously this was a big win for us,” head coach Christa Champion said. “We played so hard and I am proud for everyone on this team. They have been fighting hard each and every game, and they truly deserve this victory.”
Clark cashed in a 3-point play with just over 10 minutes to play to give OC (2-11,1-4 NCAC) its first lead of the night, 51-50. The Yeowomen battled through five more lead changes down the stretch, but a Thompson triple with three minutes to go gave them a 62-60 advantage that they would not surrender.
A jumper by Shannon Culbreath got the Gators (5-10, 2-4 NCAC) within one during the final seconds, but a pair of free throws by Smith and Thompson salted the game away for Oberlin.
The Yeowomen dialed in on 6-of-7 triple-tries in the first half to help keep things close early as they trailed by just five, 37-32, at the intermission.
OC connected on 42.6 percent (20-of-47) of its shots on the night – including an outstanding 8-for-14 (57.1 percent) effort from beyond the arc. The Yeowomen also benefited by getting the Gators in foul trouble as they committed 23 fouls in the game and had two players foul out (Stephanie Wolf and Emilie Simone). OC made them pay by converting 76.7 percent (23-of-30) of their attempts at the line.
Roneisha Kinney also contributed heavily to the win with a strong night inside - recording 10 rebounds to go along with eight points.
Oberlin travels to Denison University for a 2 p.m. NCAC match up on Saturday, January 19.
