The Oberlin women's basketball team (5-11, 1-7 North Coast
Athletic Conference) led host LaRoche College 28-23 heading into
halftime, but the Redhawks (3-13) outscored the Yeowomen 36-22 in the
finale period to secure a 59-50 non-conference victory this evening in
Pittsburgh.
LaRoche took a 43-32 lead in the second half after going on a 20-4 run to begin the period. The scoring outburst was capped by a bucket from Traci Sims with 9:17 remaining in the game. Oberlin fought back quickly and put together a nice comeback, going on a 12-0 run to take a 44-43 thanks to a layup by sophomore guard Alyssa Clark. The Redhawks responded by compiling a 8-0 run, though, that would put the contest out of the Yeowomen's reach with just over two minutes remaining.
Two Oberlin players achieved double-doubles, led by Clark, who netted 16 points and accumulated team-highs of 12 rebounds and six assists. Senior center Jessie Oram also scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while three other Yeowomen scored four points in the contest.
LaRoche was led by Lyndi Miloszewski, who tallied game-highs of 18 points and 15 boards. Marlis Graves had an impressive all-around game for the Redhawks, racking up game-highs of eight assists and eight steals to go along with nine rebounds.
"We seemed to really begin to regain our balance towards the end of the first half," Head Coach Christa Champion said. "However, their press gave us some trouble in the second period and we were a bit too tentative."
Oberlin will return to Philips Gymnasium on Wednesday for a North Coast Athletic Conference showdown with Ohio Wesleyan. Tip-off against the Battling Bishops is slated for 6:00 p.m.
