Despite 15 points by junior forward Roneisha Kinney, Oberlin falls to Big Red in Granville, 63-94

February 20, 2007 -- The Oberlin College women’s basketball team was defeated, 63-94, tonight by host Denison University in the first round of the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament. The Yeowomen’s season was ended with the loss and fell to 7-19 overall (3-13 NCAC), while the Big Red advanced to the semifinals of the tournament and improved to 22-4 overall (15-1 NCAC).
Denison jumped out to a 26-10 led with 9:33 left in the first half, but Oberlin was able to climb back to within 11 on a lay-up by sophomore Alyssa Clark with 6:50 until the break. The Yeowomen finished the half within striking distance with the deficit at 13, 29-42. To start the second half the Big Red went on a 29-15 run to stretch the led to 71-44 with 8:51 remaining in the contest. The Yeowomen were unable to get any closer in the remaining minutes.
The Yeowomen were led tonight by junior Roneisha Kinney, who had a team-high 15 points on 7-9 shooting, five rebounds, and two steals in 26 minutes of action. Oberlin was also led by sophomore Kira Rivera, who had 13 points, seven assists, and 4 rebounds.
Tonight’s game proved to be Jessie Oram’s final game as a Yeowomen. In her final game she scored 14 points, had four rebounds, and two block shots. In her four years at Oberlin, she scored 1,369 points in her career and became only the fifth Oberlin College women’s basketball player to score over 1,000 points in a career. Entering tonight’s game, Oram was second in scoring this season in the NCAC (15.4 points per contest), fourth in rebounding (7.6 per game), sixth in field goal percentage (.431 per contest), second in free-throw percentage (.775 per game), and fourth in blocked shots (1.33 per contest).
The Big Red were led by senior Kristen Sheffield, who scored 23 points and had 10 rebounds for a double-double, and sophomore Sarah Perrino, who had 15 points and grabbed four rebounds in the contest.
