Yeowomen Pick Up First Victory of Young 2007 Season

September 1, 2007 -- Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh and the Oberlin volleyball team picked up their first win of the young 2007 season today by blanking LaRoche College in three games, 30-22, 30-9, 30-19. The victory in the second day of competition at the Ohio Wesleyan University propelled them into a second match today against Lake Erie College. Against the Storm, the Yeowomen were edged in a very tight match, 1-3 (30-22, 30-32, 25-30, 28-30).

Senior Deysi Villarreal and sophomore Rita Kaplon had tremendous matches for the Yeowomen today. Against LaRoche, Villarreal boasted a .474 hitting percentage and had 12 kills on 19 attempts, while she racked up 20 kills on 41 attempts against Lake Erie. Kaplon accumulated 31 assists in the loss to the Storm.

In the opening match, every player on Oberlin's roster saw playing time in a great team win. Said Cavanaugh, "We executed well on offense and served tough, so that was certainly the reason for our win."

For its next match, Oberlin will host North Coast Athletic Conference foe Allegheny College on September 12 at 7:00 p.m.
