Oberlin had an action-packed day of home volleyball
competition this afternoon by hosting North Coast Athletic
Conference rival Hiram College and local foe Case Western
Reserve University. The Yeowomen soundly defeated the
Spartans, 3-1, but fell to Hiram, 0-3.
Oberlin came storming back from a seven-point deficit
to win game four against Case and to win the match.
The Yeowomen were able to execute down the stretch
when it mattered most.
Said Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh, "We won a lot of
long rallies with setting consistent blocks and allowing
our defense to fill in the second dimension. We
were resilient in answering the stiff challenges that
Case presented. I am proud of the team and their
urgency to compete throughout the entire match."
Against Hiram, Oberlin honored its seniors with a
0-3 loss to the nationally-ranked Terriers. The Yeowomen
stuck to their game plan, serving tough and aggressive.
They played hard, although they fell short in each
game. In game three, Oberlin had the frame tied at
12-12, but Hiram rallied for the win. Despite the loss,
it was a great team effort by Cavanaugh's Yeowomen.
Senior Deysi Villarreal played great the entire day
for Oberlin. She made tremendous plays in key situations
to guide the Yeowomen. She was very calm and steady
for her young team. Villarreal had a hand in terminating
66 plays for Yeowomen points. On the day, she had 28
kills, 34 assists, 3.5 blocks, and 37 digs.
Oberlin will finish out its season on October 30 by
hosting the College of Notre Dame at 8:00 p.m. |
