-- The Oberlin volleyball team had an excellent day as it earned non-conference victories against Chatham College and host Thiel College. With the pair of victories, the Yeowomen improved to 6-17 overall.
In the opener, Oberlin downed Chatham in straight games, 30-12, 30-15, and 30-18. Everybody on Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh's roster saw playing time as the Yeowomen accumulated an impressive 18 service aces. Senior Kate Cook and junior Amanda Van Allen had strong matches, while Rita Kaplon led the attack with 11 kills, 20 assists, and a .529 hitting percentage.
The Yeowomen were equally impressive in the second match of the day as they blanked Thiel, 3-0 (30-21, 30-28, and 30-15).
Senior Deysi Villarreal led Oberlin against Thiel with 11 kills (.529 attack percentage), 17 assists, and 1.5 blocks. Kaplon added 22 assists, while first-year Maggie Jacobson tallied 2.5 blocks.
"I was pleased with everyone's contributions in both matches. We were able to exploit our opponents weaknesses while staying focused on our game plan. Serving was outstanding shown by the fact that six out of eight players who serve tallied Aces," Cavanaugh said.
"We were able to build upon past experiences to make us stronger during clutch situations, specifically game two against Thiel. I look forward to building upon this week's momentum as we conclude the last week and a half of our schedule."
Oberlin will return to competition on October 24 when Denison University visits Philips Gym for a 7:00 p.m. showdown.
