Yeowomen Put Up Strong Fight Against #2 Wittenberg University

Maggie Jacobson (Fr.)

September 21, 2007 -- Wittenberg University, the second-ranked team in Division III, visited Philips Gymnasium this evening for a North Coast Athletic Conference volleyball match. The Tigers defeated the Yeowomen 3-0 (30-21, 30-16, 30-20), but not before Oberlin put up a strong fight against the undefeated visitors from Springfield, Ohio.

In the first game, Oberlin (3-8, 1-2 NCAC) started off hot and took advantage of a number of Wittenberg errors to jump out to an early lead. The Yeowomen led 14-13, but a rally by the Tigers (16-0, 4-0 NCAC) gave them the lead for good and Oberlin was unable to mount a rally of its own. Wittenberg controlled the second game fairly well, winning 30-16, but Oberlin again threatened for the majority of the third game, eventually falling by 10 points.

A trio of Yeowomen had outstanding matches tonight. First-year Maggie Jacobson, who played outside her usual middle position and attacked from the net for most of the match, led the way by tallying a team-best eight kills (.615 attack percentage) and two and a half blocks. Senior Deysi Villarreal continued to have an impressive season by racking up six kills, 14 digs, and seven assists. Sophomore Tammela Platt also had two aces and 12 digs.

Oberlin will look to get back into the win column on Sunday when it hosts NCAC opponent Earlham College at 2:00 p.m.
