-- This evening, Oberlin blanked rival Kenyon in three straight games, 30-15, 30-6, and 30-17, to improve to 3-7 overall. The Kenyon Ladies slipped to 0-3 overall with the loss.
The outcome was never in doubt tonight in Gambier, as the Yeowomen coasted to a convincing 30-15 win in the opening game. The second game proved to be even more decisive, as Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh's squad held the hosts to just six points. In the finale, the Ladies had their best game of the match, but it still wasn't nearly enough to overcome an efficient Oberlin offense.
Said Cavanaugh, "This win is a direct reflection of our players' hard work year-around. I'd like us to build off this victory and make winning a new tradition for Oberlin volleyball."
With four outstanding first-year players joining forces with a solid group of veterans, tonight's match could very well be the sign of great things to come for the Yeowomen. Senior Deysi Villarreal had 20 assists and hit .570 in the three games, while sophomore Rita Kaplon hit .556. Sophomore Tammela Platt racked up four aces in the match, while first-year Amanda Wysk boasted three aces and a .546 hitting percentage.
"We really showed up ready to play tonight. The team played with conviction throughout the match, and we also served and followed the game plan very well," Cavanaugh added.
The Yeowomen will return to action on Friday night when they host a strong Wittenberg University team at Philips Gym (8:00 p.m.). The match will be broadcast via Oberlin webcast beginning at 7:45 p.m.
