One of
two seniors on the Oberlin volleyball team, four-year
starter Deysi Villarreal's first North Coast Athletic
Conference victory was long over due. Her wait came
to an end tonight as she tallied 31 assists, 21 digs,
and a .160 attack percentage to lead the Yeowomen to
a 3-2 (20-30, 30-27, 22-30, 30-23, 15-9) victory over
Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.
Oberlin's
last NCAC win came almost exactly four years ago against
the same opponent. On October 18, 2003, the Yeowomen
defeated the Battling Bishops, 3-2. Tonight's win is
especially sweet for Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh and
the Yeowomen as her squad lost a heartbreaker earlier
this season at home to Ohio Wesleyan in five games.
The Yeowomen had technically snapped their NCAC win
drought earlier this season at Kenyon; however, the
Ladies were forced to cancel their season and as a
result, their three conference games were changed
to non-conference contests.
Tonight, you could draw just about any Yeowoman's
name out of a hat and you'd likely
pick a standout from the five-game match. Besides Villarreal's
outstanding night, Tammela Platt, Amanda Wysk, and
Anna Frackman also boasted exceptional performances.
Platt had 45 of the Yeowomen's 159 digs, while Wysk
and Frackman carried the team on the outside, opening
the attack up in the middle for Maggie Jacobson and
Melissa DeLombaert. Frackman had an incredible night,
avoiding a single hitting error in the last three games.
"We served really well, stayed focused and aggressive,
and remained confident through to the finish,"
Cavanaugh said. "Tonight's win is a testament to the
great amount of hard work and dedication by our program."
With the monkey now off its back, Oberlin will look
to make it two in a row in the NCAC on October 19 when
it travels to nearby Wooster for a 7:00 p.m. match.
