Allegheny and Oberlin Volleyball Teams Compete in NCAC Opener

September 12, 2007 -- The Allegheny College Gators visited Oberlin this evening for a North Coast Athletic Conference volleyball match at Philips Gymnasium. Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh's put together three very strong games, but the Gators were able to leave Oberlin with a 3-0 victory (30-26, 30-27, 30-19).

The Yeowomen had numerous scoring rallies and outstanding plays in the opening game, but seemingly every time Oberlin would threaten, Allegheny would answer with a quick score. The Gators' Jenna Hackett had 14 kills in the match, with at least a handful of them coming in the opener.

In game two, Oberlin utilized great teamwork and strong court awareness to match the Gators point-for-point, with the game tied at 13-13 at the halfway point. Allegheny was able to pull through with the 30-27 win, though, and carried over that momentum into the finale, winning 30-19.

Oberlin was led by standout play from its four first-years, Anna Frackman, Maggie Jacobson, Melissa DeLombaert, and Amanda Wysk, in their first match in front of a great crowd at Philips Gym. Additionally, senior Deysi Villarreal provided a wealth of excitement with her powerful play near the net, while sophomore libero Tammela Platt had numerous impressive hustle plays.

Villarreal led the Yeowomen with eight kills and 19 assists. Sophomore Rita Kaplon also had a solid match, racking up four kills, 19 assists, one block assist, 13 digs, and an ace.

Oberlin will again face Allegheny College for its next match on September 14 at the Westminster Tournament (5:00 p.m.).
