October 30 -- Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh's Oberlin volleyball team hosted Notre Dame College this evening for a non-conference match at Philips Gymnasium. It was the final match of the 2007 season for the Yeowomen, and also the last career match for seniors Deysi Villarreal and Kate Cook. The Yeowomen fought hard in each game, but were unable to earn a win against the Falcons, falling 0-3 (25-30, 22-30, 21-30).
After the defeat, Oberlin's record stands at 7-20 overall and 1-13 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Notre Dame improved to 19-12 overall with the road victory.
In the first game, Oberlin fell behind 7-14, but rallied back with an 11-4 run to tie the frame at 18-18. With the game tied at 25-25, though, the Falcons rattled off five straight points to claim the 30-25 win in the opener.
Oberlin and Notre Dame were tied at 7-7 in the second game, but again, the Falcons went on a roll to take a 16-11 lead. Behind 14-26, the Yeowomen made things interesting by going on a quick 8-3 run; however, the Falcons held off the late charge for the 30-22 victory.
Game three was tied at 3-3, but Notre Dame put the game out of reach quickly by jumping out to a 17-12 lead. Oberlin fought back late in the frame, but the visitors won the game, 30-21, and claimed the 3-0 victory in the match.
First-year Amanda Wysk, classmate Melissa DeLombaert, and senior Deysi Villarreal were the stars of the night for the Yeowomen. Wysk had a team-high 12 kills on 30 attempts, DeLombaert had 4.5 of her team's eight blocks, and Villarreal had seven kills, 18 assists, 16 digs, and two block assists. Villarreal and Cook played their last game in the crimson and gold with tremendous heart. Their leadership will certainly be missed in 2008.
