Yeowomen Host Wittenberg University for North Coast Athletic Conference Volleyball Match

September 22, 2006 -- Fresh off a 3-0 rout of non-conference opponent Lake Erie College on Tuesday, the Oberlin volleyball team was back in conference action this evening at Philips Gym against Wittenberg University. Despite solid play from middle hitter Elizabeth Segroves and the duo of setters Deysi Villarreal (Jr.) and Rita Kaplon (Fr.), Oberlin was defeated by the Tigers, 0-3 (14-30, 22-30, 21-30).

Still undefeated in North Coast Athletic Conference competition, Wittenberg improved to 3-0 in league play and 11-4 overall. Oberlin's record fell to 3-8 (0-4 NCAC) with the defeat.

Wittenberg jumped ahead to a 7-0 advantage early in the first game of the night, but Oberlin played consistent and strong the rest of the way, forcing the Tigers to earn every point. Segroves paced Oberlin throughout the match, tallying seven kills on 15 attempts (.333 hitting percentage) before the night was over.

Villarreal and Kaplon had strong games for Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh, staying neutral and allowing the Yeowomen to mix up their offense well.

Said Cavanaugh, "We started a bit slow, but we fought hard and adjusted well to the speed of the game. Deysi and Rita were very consistent for us tonight."

Oberlin will move on from tonight's match quickly as NCAC foe Earlham College visits Philips Gymnasium tomorrow afternoon for a 1:00 p.m. showdown.
