Senior Rose Garrett returns a shot today against Case Western Reserve University in the final game of her career

October 28, 2006 -- The Oberlin College volleyball team concluded its 2006 season this afternoon with a pair of matches against North Coast Athletic Conference foe Ohio Wesleyan University and non-conference opponent Case Western Reserve University. Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh's Yeowomen showed moments of brilliance in both matches and a number of Oberlin players put together solid statistical performances; however, Oberlin was defeated in both contests by the score of 1-3.

The Yeowomen began the day by hosting Ohio Wesleyan for a 12:00 p.m. match at Philips Gymnasium. Oberlin won the first game against the Battling Bishops, 30-25, but the visitors fought back to win the next three games (30-17, 30-13, and 30-17). Against Ohio Wesleyan, who is one of the top teams in the NCAC, junior Deysi Villarreal tallied 12 kills, 17 assists, three block assists, and 20 digs. Elizabeth Segroves had seven kills, four block assists, one block solo, and seven digs, while first-year Rita Kaplon accumulated seven kills, 18 assists, and nine digs.

Oberlin lost the first game against the Case Western Reserve Spartans, 25-30, but fought back strongly in the second game to win by the score of 30-27. After a closely contested 31-33 loss in the third game, Oberlin fell again in the fourth, 25-30, to end the match in a 1-3 defeat.

Segroves led the way against Case Reserve, tallying 15 kills and five block assists. The sophomore middle hitter also had a team-high three aces. Villarreal also put together a strong performance against the Spartans, racking up nine kills, 21 assists, five block assists, one ace, and 29 digs. In her final match for the Yeowomen, senior Alix Feeley accumulated seven kills, one ace, and nine digs.

The Oberlin volleyball squad ends its season with a 5-23 overall record and 0-16 mark in NCAC play.
