Oberlin Volleyball Squad Earns Split at Ohio Wesleyan Tournament

September 1, 2006 -- The Oberlin volleyball team traveled to Ohio Wesleyan University this evening to take part in day one of a two day tournament in Delaware, Ohio. The Yeowomen won a nail-biter in their season opener, defeating Bethany College (W. Va.) in five games.

Oberlin came out against the Bison composed and confident, winning the first game 30-22, but the Yeowomen quickly found themselves in a hole after dropping the next two games both by the score of 23-30. The Yeowomen rallied back with a vengeance, though, to win the next game 30-28 and the tiebreaker by the score of 15-12. Oberlin tallied 158 digs, 50 kills, and seven aces in the non-conference win.

In the nightcap, Bluffton proved to be a tough opponent for the Yeowomen, who returned to the court just five minutes after defeating Bethany. The Beavers stormed out to a 30-11 win in the first game and never looked back, winning 30-14 and 30-21 in the final two games.

"After a grueling first match that lasted nearly three hours, our players came out and gave everything they had left," Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. "Although we fell short of our goals against Bluffton, overall we experienced a number of positives tonight."

With today's split, the Yeowomen's record now stands at 1-1.

Oberlin will compete in day two of the Ohio Wesleyan Tournament tomorrow afternoon. Action will begin at 1:00 p.m., when the Yeowomen square off against Wilmington College.
