-- The Oberlin College volleyball team hosted the Kenyon
College Ladies tonight at Philips Gymnasium. The Yeowomen
started off strong with two kills by senior Rose Garrett
but did not have enough firepower to outlast Kenyon,
losing all three games, (30-22, 30-19, 30-27). The Yeowomen
fell to 5-21 overall and 0-15 in the North Coast Athletic
Conference.
First-year Rita Kaplon led the offensive attack for
Oberlin with nine kills. Junior Deysi Villarreal and
sophomore Caitlin Donnelly helped out with seven kills
apiece. Villarreal also led the team in assists with
18. Defensively, first-year Tammela Platt led the Yeowomen
with 16 digs.
Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh was proud of the team’s
effort. "We played with a lot of heart today. We
really played well as a team. Individuals came out when
they needed to, but we were very cohesive out there.
A lot of hustle plays fell in our favor, whereas in
the past they haven’t. I think that says some
of our work is paying off.”
Said Kaplon, "We were really connecting with the
middles more and the team had a lot of adrenaline out
there.”
The Yeowomen aim to come back strong tomorrow as they
will host Ohio Wesleyan University and Case Western
Reserve University in a doubleheader at Oberlin for
the final matches of the season. Start times are 12:00
p.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively.
